Country Cow Adventure

Throughout the summer bicycle riding becomes a part of my routine. Riding through the countryside and exploring the environment on the seat of a bike is one of my passions. On these little adventures, snapping photos is part the trip. This heard of cows is typical of many that I encounter on my rides past farmlands and fields. The painting is 8x8 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel. Eventually it will join some of my other animal paintings at the Small Impressions Gallery.

Breakfast Cow, Original Oil Painting

On my recent bike trip, I stopped by a field of cows and snapped some reference photos. It's been a while since I've painted a cow, so I reviewed some of my previous cattle paintings hoping for some inspiration. This one is 5x7 inches on a hardboard panel and is for sale at Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping. Because it is painted on a 1/4 inch hardboard panel, it will last a lifetime. I call her the Breakfast Cow because she looked like she was getting her first meal of the day. Snack Break and the new Camera Blues

I've been messing around with my new camera. I wanted something with more than my previous 4 pixels and considered a new digital SLR, but the price lead me down the path of an advanced point and shoot with a built-in zoom and the ability to make manual adjustments. I've photographed this little cow painting over and over again trying to reach the magic moment when I was completely satisfied. I'm still not there and can't decide whether it is the camera or my monsterous lack of skill. It might even be a little of both. I know professional photographers can create reproductions that are difficult to differentiate from original paintings, but to me, my little oil paintings still looks better in person. My husband says I'm a perfectionist and I'll never be satisfied. I will keep trying. This little painting, one of my efforts at getting the perfect photo, was listed at the Small Impressions Gallery, but has recently sold. It looks a lot better in person. It is 4x6 inches on a canvas panel.

Triple Cow--Original Farm Animal Painting

A couple of weeks ago, while on a bike ride near the town of Orting, Washington, I passed a field of grazing cattle. I stopped and snapped a few photo references. Mostly the cattle either ignored me or looked at me with blank stares. This triple dose of cow stares was my initial inspiration for this little 5x7 inch oil painting. I began with a wash of red iron oxide. White, ultramarine blue, and a touch of alizarin crimson finished out the limited palette. I had planned on placing the cows in the green field in which they were originally found, but after reaching this stage in my painting, I stopped. I like the warm red which reminds me of a hot dusty afternoon somewhere in the Southwest, a place I'd rather be right now as opposed to molding in the wet of the Pacific Northwest. When it dries, it will join some of my other animal paintings at Small Impressions Gallery.
