Tight Squeeze

Apples and glass have been common in my most recent paintings.  Living in Washington State, apples are always on the table, so they make a very handy subject.  Since we have had a record breaking amount of rain this month I haven't been able to get out of the house.  It has been easy to keep painting these little still life subjects with apples as the stars.  This painting is a 5x7 inch oil painting on a canvas panel.  You can visit Etsy shop to view it or make a purchase.

Black and White

This is the first in a series of little cat faces that I painted recently.  The eyes are what attracted me to painting these little 4x4 inch portraits.  My son likes my animal paintings, and made a special point of telling me I needed to list this series.  He has a collection of animal portraits that includes a goat, a gorilla, and I don't remember what else.  There is also a little baby chick painting that has his name on it.  It will probably appear in his hands on a special occasion sometime in the future. This painting is for sale at my Etsy shop along with one of his mates.  Click here if you would like to see him in the shop or make a purchase. Or, click here to see his mate.

Pacific Breakers

Today's painting was inspired by breaking surf on the Pacific Coast.  After a weekend at the coast, it is always difficult to return home, but I brought with me the inspiration to create a painting of those crashing waves.   Looking closely at those splashes, I began to recognize that there are actually shadows in that white water and that the sun makes the rocks sparkle in very subtle ways. This small oil painting is 5x7 inches and felt giant after some of my recent 4x4 and 4x6 inch paintings. Though it has SOLD, I have other small landscape paintings in my Etsy Shop. Check it out. : )

Peonies and the Rain

My garden is full of enormous peony blooms.  Red, white, pink, all have a presence. Unfortunately, the rain keeps knocking them over.  I've placed wire cages around them hoping they will stay upright, but the blooms are so heavy that even a little bit of rain and they are flat on the ground.  The salvaging process requires that I cut them, put them in vases, and bring them inside.  Then I force them to sit for me while I paint their portraits.  This little portrait is 5x7 inches and is offered for sale at my Etsy Shop. Click here to view it or make a purchase.  Follow this link to see some of my other small floral paintings

Gardening

Today's painting is listed for sale at my Etsy Shop ..  It was inspired by the abundance of produce emerging from my garden.  The funny part is that I didn't expect anything to grow.  A friend of mine gave me a box of expired seeds including radishes, three types of lettuce, and two kinds of spinach.  I threw the seeds in months ago thinking that if they came up, great.  If they didn't, I wouldn't be disappointed.  I've planted expired seeds with poor results in the past, but this year everything came up.  I've been harvesting for weeks.  It is delightful, especially that those radishes are such willing subjects for my paintings.  This painting is 4x5 inches on a canvas panel.  Check here to view all of my still life paintings that are for sale. Or, check here to view this painting in the shop or make a purchase.

River Trail

Today's painting is another that was inspired by the Deschutes River Trail near Bend, Oregon.  It is a lovely trail that weaves along the river, through pines, and towering trees.  Every time I hike this trail, I come home with plenty of inspiration.  The painting is 5x7 inches in oil paint on a Raymar Canvas Panel.  Visit this link to view it in my Etsy Shop or make a purchase.

Dechutes River Trail

Almost every time I visit Central Oregon, I hike the Dechutes River Trail.  This 5x7 inch oil painting was inspired by a visit this past April.  The weather was still trying to decide whether to move into spring or stick with the winter.  The sky vacillated between snow and sunshine.  The painting recently SOLD at my Etsy Shop, but you can view some of my other small landscape paintings, paintings of trees, fields, or barns and buildings  that are for sale in the shop by clicking on the highlighted links.

Peace

These lovely Peace roses are beginning to bloom in my back yard.  I love the the subtlety of the oranges and pinks that emerge from its petals.  As soon as the paint was dry, this painting was listed for sale in my Etsy Shop.  It is 4x4 inches on a canvas panel and was created with artists grade oil paints. It SOLD in a very short time, but some of my other paintings of flowers are still available.

Mother's Day

It has been a little over a week now since Mother's Day.  I finally took the time to haul this wonderful bouquet into my studio and capture the light before the flowers and the foliage fade.  The painting is 16x20 inches, larger than my usual, but so much fun to use big brushes and paint loose.

Adventure

So far, this has been a month of adventure and beautiful weather.  I've traveled up and down the west coast, traveled east, and returned home again.  To top it off, we've had an unbelievable six weekends straight with sunshine, unheard of in Washington State during the spring where we usually have nothing but rain.  Luckily, the rain came only during the week and God left sunshine for everyone's days off on Saturday and Sunday.   I haven't spent near as much time  in my studio as I would like.  It felt good to find some time to do just that.  This 9x12 inch oil painting is a little life guard shack just north of Santa Monica in California. Yesterday morning was a delightful time in the studio recreating an adventure we had riding bicycles down the California coast. The painting SOLD at my Etsy Shop, but I have many other landscape oil  paintings still for sale.

Road to the Beach

April has flown by and I have not done near as much painting as is my usual.  Visiting family, enjoying a couple of sunny weekends and I realize my studio has been neglected and the paintings have been sparse.  In spite of that, I am happy to have finished this little 6x8 painting.  It took a while because I kept fussing with it.  I was trying to capture that funny weather that occurs in the Northwest where the sun is shinning, but a light fog hangs in the air at the same time.  The Washington Coast is especially prone to those kinds of days.  This road to the beach was my inspiration.  Head down that path and you will find yourself on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.  Hope you enjoy your stay.  The painting is for sale at my Etsy Shop.  You can purchase it or view it in the shop by clicking here

A Little Bit of Ireland

I cannot say exactly where in Ireland one might find this lighthouse.  It is painted from a photograph my daughter took on her last visit.  I loved the cool feel of the rocky shoreline and the warmth of the grass in front.  It was also a pleasure to paint.  The painting is 12x12 inches on a heavy 1-1/2 inch thick gallery-wrapped canvas.  My original plan was to paint this and another from the same photo collections, but I haven't quite gotten there yet.  This one is for sale in my Etsy Shop.  Click here to visit the shop or make a purchase.

Lemon Tricksters

Painting lemons is a great little challenge.  It isn't easy to get just the right values for these sunny little fruits. Yellow is a trickster. I messed around with these two fellows quite a bit.  Finally called it good and placed the painting in my Etsy Shop for sale.  The painting is 6x8 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas.  Visit my shop, Small Impressions Paintings, to view it or make a purchase.
