Field Trees

This week I've been messing around doing some plein aire painting.  I completed four little studies and wasn't satisfied with any of them.  I couldn't get the values and the composition right. The constantly changing light challenged me significantly.   Finally I finished this little 5x7 inch study and felt satisfied with it.   I began with a wash of alizarin crimson, then mixed some veridian with the alizarin for the darkest tone.  Some Naples yellow and a little sap green helped me to create some sunny hues for the grass in the foreground.  This one will probably be used as a reference for a larger painting.

Red Clay Bank

Today I delivered eleven paintings to  Northwest Fine Woodworking in Seattle's  Pioneer Square.  They will be showing in August and September.  Nothing like a big delivery to get the inspiration going.  When I got home the studio felt empty.  I pulled out a new canvas and painting this 16x20 inch oil painting.  I'm going to have to work hard to fill up those empty walls.

Surf Runner

A sweet little girl on father's day inspired this little 4x6 inch oil painting.  I'll add it to my people at the beach series.  Haven't yet decided if these will stay small studies or eventually turn in to something bigger.

Apology

Every once in a while a little apology is in order.  This painting was inspired by this single red bloom received as an apology.  The simplicity and sincerity that accompanied the offering encouraged me to take it to the studio and commemorate the occasion.  The painting was completed in oils on a 5x7 inch canvas panel.

Summer Tree

The summer skies are finally here!  Blue sky has been missing for months, but it has come to visit.  I'm hoping it stays around for a while.  Summer skies inspired this 11x14 inch tree painting.  It is a pleasure to be bathing in sunshine again.

Man with a Bag

Yesterday I spent a lot of time practicing painting figures.  I began with a 5x7 inch canvas panel and some reference photos.  When I started, my intent was to paint a figure, wipe it out, paint another, wipe it out. Working on the same panel gave me a lot of practice, but didn't chew up a lot of supplies.  On this panel I painted about four different figures, wiping each out after I was finished.  This fellow was my last attempt in the session, so I let him live.  It was a really useful exercise and a lot of fun, too!
