Triple Cow--Original Farm Animal Painting

A couple of weeks ago, while on a bike ride near the town of Orting, Washington, I passed a field of grazing cattle. I stopped and snapped a few photo references. Mostly the cattle either ignored me or looked at me with blank stares. This triple dose of cow stares was my initial inspiration for this little 5x7 inch oil painting. I began with a wash of red iron oxide. White, ultramarine blue, and a touch of alizarin crimson finished out the limited palette. I had planned on placing the cows in the green field in which they were originally found, but after reaching this stage in my painting, I stopped. I like the warm red which reminds me of a hot dusty afternoon somewhere in the Southwest, a place I'd rather be right now as opposed to molding in the wet of the Pacific Northwest. When it dries, it will join some of my other animal paintings at Small Impressions Gallery.

Sunshine on a Path--Original Landscape Tree Painting

With winter in full swing, I am longing for warm weather and sunshine. I dug around in my photos and found a reference from last summer that satisfied my urge for some sunshine. This is a large tree on the side of the road at Fort Steilacoom Park in Pierce County, Washington. The road circles a little lake and is one of my favorite places when the weather begins to warm up. Until spring arrives again, I'm going to have to be satisfied with painting sunshine. This oil painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel. It is for sale at Small Impressions Gallery and can be purchased for $35.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses if you click here.

Energy Dog--Original Dog Portrait

I don't know his name, but he's really fast. He heards other dogs and small children with boundless energy. His playful nature and long tongue inspired me to create his portrait. We met at the dog park yesterday afternoon and he left quite an impression. He'll be joining some of my other animal paintings at Small Impressions Gallery when he dries. He was created on a 5x7 inch canvas panel with professional grade oil paints.

Riding-- American Bicycle Painting

Today was the first day of sunshine that we've had in a while. Even though it was chilly and damp, I took a bike ride. It felt great to get out after weeks of rain. Lots of leaves on the road made for a colorful path. That's my husband in the distance. I'm always trying to catch up. This painting is 5x7 inches on a hardboard panel and can be purchased for $50.00 plus $6.50 shipping to US addresses by clicking here.

Winter Shores--Original Landscape Oil Painting

Winter continues in the Northwest. We don't often get snow, but the wind and rain have been constant. This afternoon I took a walk along the Soundview Trail in Pierce County, Washington. The wind was gusting at 30-35 mph, but the rain had stopped. It was brisk and refreshing. This little 5x7 inch oil painting documents the color of winter in the Pacific Northwest--a little green and a lot of gray. It will eventully be listed for sale at Small Impressions Gallery along with some of my other small landscape oil paintings.

Wedges--Small Still Life Oil Painting

The paint is finally dry on this little 5x7 inch still life oil painting. The cool, damp air of winter slows down the drying time. It took almost a month for the heavy brush strokes to harden. I set my wet paintings on old 45 record stands to dry. It works well, but in the winter time, they fill up and I run out of space. My husband cringes at the idea of turning up the heat any more, so I'm destined to share my space with lots of wet paintings. Things could be worse--wet dogs--wet towels--wet shoes! Oh the perils of living in the Northwest where the rain seems to never stop. When I think of it this way, I'm happy--wet paintings are a luxury I should not take for granted. This little painting is for sale at Small Impressions Gallery for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses. Northwest rain not included.

November--Original American Landscape Oil Painting

This past weekend I took a wonderful bicycle ride through the Orting Valley in Pierce County, Washington State. Soon after I began the 15 mile trail from Puyallup to South Prairie, I encountered this lovely stand of trees. Even though it had been raining for days and the month of November had walked itself halfway to December, the beautiful orange leaves still hung on. I stopped and took several reference photos, knowing I would want to recreate the color sensation. Finally I had a chance to do a quick study. This little painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel. It has been placed in Small Impressions Gallery along with my other small paintings and can be purchsed for $35.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses.

Citrus -- Original Small Still Life Oil Painting

Today's little 6x6 inch oil painting is a study I did for a larger painting that I haven't yet finished. In the dark winter months of the Pacific Northwest, the bright yellow reminds me of summer and warmer climates. This version was completed on a canvas panel and is now for sale at Small Impressions Gallery for $36.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses.

Purple Chat--Original Still Life Oil Painting--Onions

It is a good thing I got outside yesterday, the rain has returned. The bright spot is that I spend more time in my studio creating new works. Looking for colorful produce to paint is a bit more of a challenge in the winter than in the summer, but luckily, these three purple onions hitched a ride home from the grocery store and decided to chit-chat while I painted them. It was fun working with a limited palette of Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White. The painting is 8x10 inches and will be listed for sale at Small Impressions Gallery along with some of my other small still life oil paintings as soon as it dries.

Bicycling, Painting, and a Couple of Sheep

This morning is cold and clear. These days have been few and far between in the past month. I want to take advantage and get some fresh air, exercise, and some good reference photos. My favorite bike ride is through the Orting Valley in Pierce County, Washington. Travelling through rural Western Washington State provides me with a lot of inspiration for painting my Small Impressions paintings. I love to see the animals grazing and the natural beauty of the landscape. The fresh air and exercise relieves stress and makes me feel like I'm a carefree kid again. This little painting was inspired by a view of the passing landscape on one of my rides. It is 4x6 inches on a canvas panel and is for sale in the Small Impressions Gallery . This sheep painting was created on an affordable canvas panel is one of a series of animal paintings I've worked on lately. It can be purchased for $24.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses.

Snack Break--Original American Cow Portrait

The sun has finally appeared. I think it is a tribute to our veterans on their holiday. The rain in the Pacific Northwest has been ceaseless, double the average for the month in a region already known for continuous percipitation. But, today it out! This little 4x6 inch painting celebrates the return of sunshine, shadows, fresh air, and American veterans who have kept the United States free. Although it has SOLD, there are a number of other paintings in my animal collection at Small Impressions Gallery.

Piglets--Contemporary Animal Oil Painting

It is time for these two little fellows to move to a new home. They've been residing in my studio for several months, but will be moving to the Small Impressions Gallery sometime this week. I've been trying to stock the animals section, but my little paintings of animals don't seem to want to stick around for very long. Since the first of October I have sold three sheep , two dog, and two cow paintings. Several of them haven't even made it to the gallery before they were sold. Needless to say, I'm thrilled! This painting is 8x10 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel and will be listed for $125.00 plus $12.00 for shipping to US addresses.

Lemon-Lime--Contemporary Still Life Painting

Today was stormy. Usually I like to photograph my paintings by the morning light of my studio window, but this morning it was so dark and rainy, I couldn't get enough light for decent photos. After numerous attempts that resulted in dark, useless photos, I gave up and went back to painting. By afternoon, I was able to get a shot of this 8x10 painting, but the light was bright enough for only a short time and angry dark clouds moved in again. I'm going to make sure my studio is full of bright, pure color this week, even if the sky outside won't cooperate. This painting can be purchased for $125.00 plus $12.00 for shipping to US addresses by visiting my online gallery, Small Impressions. Just click here to put it in a shopping cart.

Grazing--Original American Cow Portrait

This little 6x8 inch painting on a canvas panel has been one of my favorite cow paintings. She is so peaceful as she grazes on a hillside meadow. But I make it a policy not to hold on to my paintings for long. Passing them on to a new owner keeps me motivated and keeps me painting. Thus, I added her to the Small Impressions Gallery with some of my other animal paintings and she sold almost immediately.

Donkey or Mule? Original Animal Painting

Apparently there is a difference between a donkey, a mule, and a burro, but I don't know what it is. This little 4x6 inch painting on a canvas panel is one of those three, but since I'm not a farm girl, I don't know which one. This sweet animal was hanging its head over a fence and asking to be remembered, so when I got home, this painting comemorated our introduction. It will be entered into Small Impressions Gallery later this week along with some of my other small animal paintings.
