Minimalist Spring

After the dark and gloomy days of winter, it is refreshing when blooms finally begin to appear.  The Iris blooms that inspired this minimalist floral painting blessed my backyard and gave the rest of my garden a role model to follow.  I couldn't resist painting this early leader of the garden parade.  The original painting is on canvas and is 8x10 inches.  Reproduction fine art prints are also available.  Visit my website and this page for details on sizes, surfaces, and prices.

The Last Lily

With every day that passes, I think the last of the Day Lilies in my yard have come and gone. I've been quite wrong this year. We are having one of the driest fall seasons on record and the flowers keep on blooming. I love it! I was sure when I picked this one, it was the end, but that was weeks ago.  This small 5x7-inch painting is available for purchase here.  It was created on gallery-wrapped canvas and can be hung with or without a frame.

Hosta Bloom

The flowers in my yard are prolific right now.  I've had a fun day picking and painting some of the blooms.  I know they will fade soon, so it has been fun to take advantage of the season.  This bloom was picked from one of my Hosta plants.  The large colorful leaves are what most people enjoy about these delightful plants, but they also produce a delicate little stalk of flowers.  The strange thing is, I noticed on each stalk that all the flowers face the same direction.  They must be looking at the sun.  It was tempting to take some artistic license and place some of the blooms on the opposite side of the stalk, but I painted them as they were and enjoyed adding the shadow they produced on the wall behind the vase.  This painting and several other little floral paintings I've produced the last couple of days are for sale at my Etsy shop, Small Impressions Paintings. Apology

Every once in a while a little apology is in order.  This painting was inspired by this single red bloom received as an apology.  The simplicity and sincerity that accompanied the offering encouraged me to take it to the studio and commemorate the occasion.  The painting was completed in oils on a 5x7 inch canvas panel.

In the Backyard

This 5x7 inch oil painting was painted with the wish for sunshine. Rain again all day. It gives me a lot of time in the studio, but I am missing springtime. Cone Flower

It won't be long until these will be blooming in my yard. Sprouts are emerging and the brave crocus have lead the floral parade. Moving About

As I mentioned to several who commented on my last post, I don't paint flowers often, but I played with my carnations a bit more. This is a 6x8 inch Raymar canvas panel that I divided into four segments. For each segment, I moved the flower and painted the background with left over paint mixed with white. It was fun to see the possibilities. I think my favorite is the one in the lower right corner.

Valentine Carnations

My husband always gives me carnations for special occasions; today was no exception! It is our tradition and I love the fact that he doesn't give me roses. We are a pair of practical minded souls and the price of roses makes me cringe. I'm happy with my carnations and am glad that he and I almost always see the world in the same way. Blooming Time

Yesterday the clouds lifted and the sun finally showed its face. I went on a long bicycle ride and it seemed like spring had finally arrived. This little bloom sprang from my imagination and my desire for the blooming time to come again. I'm not sure what, if any, kind of flower it might be, but it felt good to imagine the flowers were blooming again. The painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel. Lilac Bundle

With the gray, cold skies outside, my inspiration today came from photos I took last summer when the lilacs in my backyard were blooming. Gerbera

Recently I was lucky to be the recipient of a collection of red Gerbera Daisies left over after a family wedding. At first my thought was to plant them in my garden, then I arranged them on my patio, then I decided to paint them. This is one of a series of three 6x8 inch paintings that resulted from my fortunate inheritance. I love the red color and the delightful memories that these little daisies have brought to my household. Sunshine and Flowers

The sun is out and I've gone crazy this week picking and painting flowers from my yard. Calendula, daisies, and some other yellow flowers of which I cannot name have all crossed the table in my studio the past couple of days. Sunshine on Canvas

Finally, the sun has come out in the Pacific Northwest. The thermometer hit 77 degrees yesterday. After over 200 days of weather below 75, it felt wonderful. I celebrated by painting sunflowers. Not only is the color bright, but they lend themselves well to a loose style and thick paint. Summer is finally here. When the paint dries, it will be offered for sale with some of my other floral paintings at Etsy. It has been hard to keep the gallery stocked with these sunny little works of art.
