Holiday Fruit

It is that time of year when these little cuties are on tables everywhere.  Their bright color makes them delightful to paint.  Although this painting has SOLD, there are a number of  other small tropical fruit paintings,  for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  This painting is a 5x7 inch oil painting on a canvas panel.  The paintings for sale in my Etsy shop range from a small 4x4 inch painting up to a size of 11x14 inches.  I hope you will stop by for a visit and view the entire collection of small format oil paintings for sale.

Winter Pears

Today's 6x8 inch painting was inspired by a couple of golden pears.  It is wonderful that such delightful fruit is available when the weather is cold.  Their sweetness brings a taste of sunshine to a cold winter's day.  The painting can be purchased or viewed in my Etsy Shop at this link

A Little Winter Sunshine

With the cold weather in full force, I dug around in my collection of bright, sunny paintings and found this 9x12 inch oil painting that I created last summer when the weather was warm and flowers bloomed in the backyard.  It is now for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  Like most of my paintings, it was created with artist grade oil paints on a gallery-wrapped canvas.  Staples are on the back, so it can be hung with or without a frame.  I hope someone who is longing for some sunshine will purchase it and make their home a little brighter.  Click here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.  This link will take you to the shop where you can view some of my other tropical fruit paintings.

Winter Chill

Cold, cold, cold.  It is here for a while, so chilly landscapes are finding their way to my canvases.  Though beautiful, the water is ready to shock anyone who might accidentally dip their foot.  This painting of a mountain creek is for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  Click here to view it or make a purchase.  You can also view my other landscape paintings at this link or this one

On a Country Road

Although I've been riding my bicycle during the winter months, nothing beats riding in the warmth of the summer sun.  I'm getting tired of the cold, the three shirts, the two pairs of socks, and the double layer of pants.  It is only when painting that my imagination takes me to those warm weather rides that I'm missing.   This 8x10 inch oil painting, created when I was longing for warmth, is for sale at my Etsy Shop, Painting Small Impressions.  Click here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

Red is the Color!

The holidays are so busy, I've had trouble keeping up with postings.  Luckily, painting has still been on-going.  With the season in mind, red is the color I've had my eye on.  This little red pepper decided to go along with my desire for red and dressed appropriately.  She is for sale and can be viewed or purchased here, or you can view all of my paintings for sale at this link

End of the Season

This year was an amazing year for growing tomatoes.  Here it is almost December and my crop of Sweet 100's is finally at an end.  Every year I plant two or three of these prolific producers.  Once they start producing clumps of sweet little fruits, they keep it up until the weather calls it to a close.  Mid-October is usually the end of the season when the weather starts to get cold and sharp rains split the fruit, but this year they held on until about a week ago.  Heavy rain and cold mornings called an end to our party.  This little 5x7 inch oil painting pays tribute to these wonderful plants.  This painting has SOLD, but you can visit my Etsy Shop  to view more of my small fruit paintings.

Farm Dreams

Recently I've been reading about the disappearance of family farms in America.  As a life-long suburban dweller, I finally recognize why so many people like paintings of farm land and barns.  We want to pretend that somewhere an idyllic family farm is ready to supply an escape from our hectic modern lives.  We want to believe that some day we will be able to raise our own food and our own livestock.  It is a nice dream. It makes me happy to paint barns, farms, and freshly turned fields that will help to fuel our fantasies of a quaint agrarian society.  For anyone who would like to plant a piece of this dream in their home or office, this little 5x7 inch oil painting can be purchased from my online art gallery, Small Impressions PaintingsVisit here to view the painting in the gallery or make a purchase.

Suspicious Crow

He looks suspicious.  I'm sure he's done something illegal--something like theft--something he doesn't want anyone to notice.  At least, that's how these fellows tend to look when they stop by my backyard.  This painting was inspired by a crow standing knee deep in dried grass and looking like the guilty animal he is.  The painting is 6x6 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel.  It has SOLD, but other paintings of crows are available in  my Etsty Shop, Small Impressions Painting.  Click this link to see my paintings of birds and animals.

Golden Days

Most of these lovely golden trees have disappeared for this year.  Wind, rain, and now the threat of snow have obliterated the lovely color of fall and all that is left is a fond memory of crisp golden days.  This little painting is for sale in my Etsy Shop.  Click here to view it in the shop or make  a purchase.

Windbreak

This weekend was the first winter storm of the season.  With a lot of wind and rain, I am reminded of the windbreaks of rural America, designed to slow down the gush of a wind.  This little 5x7 inch oil painting inspired by a country windbreak is for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  Click here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

Blue Skies

When I painted this 6x8 inch oil painting, blue skies were dominating my thoughts.  Big blue skies and warm weather sound so inviting on cool November days.  My dreams are of leaving the cold, dampness of the Northwest and heading to a warm place where the skies are blue and I don't need a raincoat.  The painting is for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings, and can be viewed or purchased by clicking here.

Waiting for Paint to Dry

It is clear that the cool damp weather has arrived.  It took almost two weeks for the paint to dry on this 8x10 inch oil painting.  Oil paint is naturally slow to dry, but when winter arrives, it feels like forever.  There is quite a bit of heavily textured paint on the autumn trees, nevertheless, I am impatient.  Now that it is finally dry, I've listed the painting for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  Click here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

Autumn Hike

A crispy autumn hike inspired this 5x7 inch oil painting.  There is nothing like a sunny day in October to get a person out of the house and breathing deep.  Fresh air and the smell of pine are reminders that the clouds and rain are not forever.  The painting can be purchased at Small Impressions Paintings on Etsy.  Visit this link to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

Roosting in the Hen House

Often, when a painting isn't turning out the way I like, I'll wipe it off the canvas and set the canvas aside.  The wipe off leaves color, but not any discernible image. When it dries, into a bin it goes.  I have a box of canvases that have the residue of an unsuccessful paintings.  The funny thing is, days later, when the canvas is dry, that  left over color provides me with some crazy, abstract inspiration.  This little 6x6 inch painting is the result of some of that kind of inspiration.  I can't remember what was originally painted on the canvas, but the wipe out left a beautiful dark red, a wonderful color for the deep recesses of a happy little chicken coop and a pair of roosting fowl.  I am happy with the resurrection and have placed the painting for sale in my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  It can be viewed in the shop or purchased at this link.

Up the Hill on a Bicycle

Finally, my house is in order after several weeks of chaos.  The carpets are new, the studio is organized, and I spent the morning enjoying peace, quiet, and paint.  The result is today's little 5x7 inch oil painting that was inspired by one of my favorite bicycle rides.  In Point Defiance Park at the North End of Tacoma in Pierce County, Washington is where one will find this magnificent ride.  The road through the park is one way and the speed limit for automobiles is 25 miles an hour.  The foliage is beautiful and old growth trees line the scenic path.  Puget Sound viewpoints are sprinkled along the way and rolling hills create a wonderful challenge.  This little painting is based on the first part of the trip through the park's Five-mile Drive.  When traveled by car, it seems like a slight incline, but on a bicycle, it feels a lot longer and steeper.  Some of the friends I ride with call it "The Monster,"  but I've grown to love this fun little challenge.  Slipping into the low gear, keeping a steady pace, and looking for landmarks that signal progress has made this pathway one I love.  The tree in this painting is one of my beloved landmarks.  It signals the halfway point on the trek up the hill.  Visit my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings and where it can be purchased or viewed in the shop.  Click  this link to view it.

Studio Blues

It has been a week since I have been able to set foot in my studio.  I'm getting the no-paint blues.  We are putting new carpet in the house which has caused considerable upheaval.   The living room is finished, but my entire studio is stacked in the front room.  Paintings are piled everywhere.  In spite of a lack of room for painting, I haven't stopped the movement of paintings into my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  This painting is 11x14 inches, was completed in oil, and can be viewed or purchased by clicking here. I'm hoping this blue painting will help cure my no-paint blues and get that darned carpet installed a little faster.

The Mountain

Wherever you live in the Pacific Northwest it seems one can view a mountain.  This one is Mount Rainier viewed across Puget Sound in the late evening at sunset.  It has set me onto a series of little mountain paintings.  There's something really fun about painting a giant mountain onto tiny little canvases.  This one is 4x6 inches and can be purchased at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings, by clicking here.

Storm Field

Fall has arrived.  Pedaling my bicycle is risky business these days.  I'm never sure whether the rain will show up before I get to my destination.  The sky threatens all the time and  inspired this 4x6 inch oil painting that is now for sale in my Etsy Shop with some of my other landscape paintings.  Visit this link to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

House on the Shore

An old house on a rocky shore inspired this 8x10 inch painting.  Capturing the rocks along the bank was the biggest challenge.  There are so many things to consider--the direction of the light, the shift of color where the rocks are wet, the growth of algae.  I'm pleased with how the painting turned out.  Now that it is dry, it is listed for sale in my Etsy ShopClick here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.

Chrome and Oranges

This has been a very busy month.  Although I have been painting, it has been a challenge to keep up with my blog.  It feels good to be posting today's painting after a week of absence.  It is 8x10 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas.  The best part was painting the reflections on the shiny metal bowl.  It is for sale in my Etsy Shop, Painting Small Impressions, with some of my other paintings of tropical fruit. After the Rain

Today's painting is of a freshly plowed field just after a rainstorm.  I loved the way everything glistened when the sun peaked through the clouds.  Steam rising from the furrows and moisture in the air resulted in cool refreshed air.  The painting is 8x10 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas.  Though this painting is SOLD, many of my other orange landscape paintings are available at Fine Art America.

Painting a Country Road

Painting roads is always an interesting challenge.  They have a color and texture that depends so much on what kind of road it is.  Concrete, paved, gravelly, dirt, overgrown, in sun, in shadow, or both--there are so many variables that contribute to the skills test of painting.  Nothing like a road to give a painter a challenge and cause one to ponder the metaphoric nature of the road.  Although this painting has SOLD, there are others for sale in my Etsy Shop Gallery, Small Impressions Paintings

Summer Cow

For a little end-of-summer fun, I painted this little girl.  She seemed friendly, like she wanted to get to know me.  I wonder how she would feel knowing I painted her picture and we never even introduced ourselves.  The painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel.  I've listed her for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  Click here to view or purchase.

Fast and Fun

This little 5x7 inch painting has to be one of the fastest paintings I've ever created.  When I began, I was planning to spend a leisurely morning in the studio.  A wash of alizarin crimson, a rough sketch, and the distant mountain peaks were all that I had completed when my husband rushed in and told me we had a date to meet some friends in 30 minutes and I needed to get ready to go.  Totally unexpected, I filled in the color blocks, cleaned up, and called it good.  The funny part is, I actually like the painting with little detail, just color blocks.  It makes me think I'll have to try some more quick paintings. The painting is for sale online at Small Impressions Paintings

Limited Palette Abstract

For months I've had a box of 12x12 inch canvases sitting in my studio.  I haven't used but a few of them because I was waiting for just the right subject.  Yesterday morning I finally said, "What the heck--I'm never going to find just the right subject." So, I just pulled one out and decided to go for it.  I prefer landscape paintings with a slight abstraction.  That made my job a little easier not to worry about perfection.  With a limited palette of Burt Sienna, Yellow Ocher, Naples Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, and Ultramarine Blue, I began work.  There's definitely some abstraction, but what I like best about the painting is the feel of the autumn season that the limited palette brought to the canvas. It will be available for purchase in my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings, sometime this fall.

Autumn Birch

A little bit of autumn is creeping into the August air.  Some cool nights after warm sunshine and I know the summer season will be coming to a close in a few weeks.  This little 5x7 inch painting, inspired by the coming autumn season, is one that I painted a while ago, didn't like it, and did some reworking.  I like it a lot better now and listed it for sale today at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings.  It can be purchased for $50.00 plus shipping by visiting this link

Painting the Ponderosa Pine

In the Pacific Northwest, especially west of the Cascade Mountains, fir trees abound.  I've painted them my entire life and feel comfortable with their shape and color. This summer, however, I spent a lot of time in Central Oregon.  Ponderosa Pines are the evergreen of choice for the climate.  Their shape is different, their needles are different, and they often have a wonderful reddish color to their bark which the Douglas Fir Trees of coastal region lack.  It has taken practice through most of the summer to feel comfortable with painting pine trees.  This 8x10 inch oil painting feels like a success.  It is listed for sale in my Etsy Shop now that the paint is completely dry.  It feels good to finally feel satisfied with my ability to create those uniquely shaped limbs of the pine tree.  View the painting in the shop or purchase by clicking here.  The painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas.  The price is $110.00 plus shipping.

Cottages at Venice Beach

Earlier this summer on one of my little vacations, I visited Venice Beach, California.  Although I have visited Southern California numerous times, the experience reminded me that it is a world apart from the environment of the Pacific Northwest where I can be in the wilderness in less than 15 minute and sit on an empty beach for hours without interruption. It was definitely a change for a native Washingtonian.  Venice Beach was full of little cottages that encouraged dreaming of vacation rentals and warm weather. While there, I snapped  a lot of pictures of  the unique little cottages that proliferate the area.  Painting this string of homes required a review of perspective drawing and careful attention to values. The painting, completed with oil paint, is 9x12 inches on a stretched canvas.  I can't decide whether to sell this one or keep it and create an entire series of  the cute little cottages that surround Venice Beach.  I'll let the paint dry and contemplate my next step.

Across the Tulip Field

Today's little painting is a scene I have painted before. Looking back through some of my references, I chose one of my favorites.  The photo was taken in the Skagit Valley of Washington State.  In the spring the community celebrates their Tulip Festival.  I have fond memories of this little scene; it begged to be painted again.  The painting is 6x6 inches is listed for sale at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings and can be viewed or purchased by visiting this link.

Single Girl

This summer I've been very fortunate because of the opportunities I've had to travel, visit friends, family, and wonderful vacation spots.  Even though travel has been frequent, I've tried to keep painting.  My paints and supplies go with me most places.  The challenge is that it takes some time for me to adjust to a new painting environment.  Wherever I go, the light is different, the working space is different, and the cleanup after each session is greater than at home in my studio.  However, the biggest challenge is trying to remember how to paint with all the new distractions.  Often I overwork a painting. With this painting I made a special effort to concentrate on painting shapes, colors, and keeping it loose.  The results were fun and a little abstract.  I'm satisfied.  The painting is 5x7 inches and reaffirmed that I can still paint amidst all the distractions of a new environment. It can be purchased at my Etsy Shop for $40.00 plus shipping by clicking on this link.

Across the Field

It seems my inspiration comes in runs of still life work, then landscape, then some animals.  My attention on a particular subject seems unable to stay focused on one genre for more than a few weeks or so lately.  Luckily I can paint more than one thing!  This week I have begun  landscape work again.  My intention this summer was to paint some larger landscapes, but I've strayed into other directions.  Maybe this little sprint of small landscapes will lead to something larger.  This painting is a 5x7 inch oil study that may have some potential for larger work if I can keep my attention focused.  Too much summer fun seems to be getting in the way. The painting can be viewed in the Small Impressions Gallery here and purchased for $40.00 plus shipping to US addresses.

Hosta Bloom

The flowers in my yard are prolific right now.  I've had a fun day picking and painting some of the blooms.  I know they will fade soon, so it has been fun to take advantage of the season.  This bloom was picked from one of my Hosta plants.  The large colorful leaves are what most people enjoy about these delightful plants, but they also produce a delicate little stalk of flowers.  The strange thing is, I noticed on each stalk that all the flowers face the same direction.  They must be looking at the sun.  It was tempting to take some artistic license and place some of the blooms on the opposite side of the stalk, but I painted them as they were and enjoyed adding the shadow they produced on the wall behind the vase.  This painting and several other little floral paintings I've produced the last couple of days are for sale at my Etsy shop, Small Impressions Paintings. Visit this link to view the painting in the shop and make a purchase or click here to see all of my small floral paintings for sale.
