Single Girl

This summer I've been very fortunate because of the opportunities I've had to travel, visit friends, family, and wonderful vacation spots.  Even though travel has been frequent, I've tried to keep painting.  My paints and supplies go with me most places.  The challenge is that it takes some time for me to adjust to a new painting environment.  Wherever I go, the light is different, the working space is different, and the cleanup after each session is greater than at home in my studio.  However, the biggest challenge is trying to remember how to paint with all the new distractions.  Often I overwork a painting. With this painting I made a special effort to concentrate on painting shapes, colors, and keeping it loose.  The results were fun and a little abstract.  I'm satisfied.  The painting is 5x7 inches and reaffirmed that I can still paint amidst all the distractions of a new environment. Lemon Blue, Oil Painting

Today's painting was fast and fun. When I created it, focusing on shapes and colors without regard to the subject matter was my goal. Even though I tried to avoid thinking abou the idea that I was painting lemons, it still turned out looking like lemons. I'm quite satisfied with the abstract results. The painting is 8x8 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel.

Oranges and Blue

Having fresh oranges year round is a luxury that my grandparents probably didn't enjoy. I'm grateful that in the middle of winter, when the rain is pouring down, the days are short, and the skies are gray, I can still enjoy the sunshine a fresh orange brings to my household. My good fortune helped in making it possible for me to paint this 8x10 inch oil painting. As I painted, I focused on shapes and color rather than the idea that I was painting an orange. The results are abstract and painterly. These oranges will be joining my other paintings at Small Impressions Gallery within the next few weeks. Watching Paint Dry

It seems I am always waiting for my paintings to dry. I look at the number of blog posts that end with, "When it is dry . . ." It finally made some sense today when I realized that my favorite oil paint, M. Graham, is made with walnut oil instead of the more common lindseed. Oil paint is slow to dry anyway, but apprently walnut oil slows the process even more. Some colors are slower than others. Titanium white takes its time as well as does cadmium yellow. Perhaps that is why it took so long for this painting to finally dry to the touch. Major ingredients included both of those colors plus the fact that the paint was thick and juicy. As a result of my patience and daily checking to see what is dry in my studio and what needs to sit a little longer, I was finally able to pull this one off the drying rack, list it for sale at Small Impressions, and feel good about not having to say, "When it dries . . ." Sunny Pear Abstract--American Oil Painting

Today's painting is an 8x10 abstract still life. A group of pears sitting in strong sunlight create interesting shadows upon each other and the fabric upon which they are sitting. It was the patterns and colors that interested me more than the fruit itself. I was glad to find the time to paint during this busy holiday season and regret that I can't find more I'm looking forward to a day of uninterrupted painting time. Hope it comes soon.
