Fruit Binge

I'm on a binge; a binge for painting fruit.  I go through these stages where I want color.  Fresh fruit provides it for me.  Three red apples, one with only a half life left, were my subject for this original oil painting.  It was created on a 6x6 inch gallery canvas.  When it dries, I will sell the original in my Etsy Shop.  Reproduction prints on archival paper, canvas, acrylic, or metal are also available from my website in sizes up to 35x36 inches. 

Study in Stripes

This is another of my little ceramic cup studies. Working on those reflections was fun and I added a collection of stipes for a little extra challenge. Though I like the way the cup turned out, I'm going to have to stop myself from picking the rest of it apart. The danger of fussing to much is that sometimes rather than getting better, a painting can get worse. Knowing when to stop is a trick that I'm always working on.

Organizing the Gallery

Last evening I spent some time organizing the paintings in my Small Impressions Gallery into sections. If you visit and look at the listings on the right of the shop, you can see the new sections that were created last night. I'm very happy with the new organization. Painting every day is a great way to improve skill, but it also creates a lot of paintings. I sell them online to pay for my supplies and art related activities, but after a while the gallery can get pretty cluttered. Being organized is a very satisfying experience. Tennis Art

This is the first of a couple of tennis ball paintings I've been asked to create. I wasn't sure when I'd be able to get started on this commission until next month, so it was nice to steal some time a put this one together. It is a 4x6 inch oil painting on a canvas panel. I'm happy the way it turned out and hope the companion piece that comes next will turn out as well.

Art Obsession--Citrus Fruit Obsession--Color Obsession--My Obsession

So, I seem to be obsessed with citrus fruit of late. I love the colors; I love the shapes; I love the fun. Oranges, lemons, limes--it doesn't seem to matter. Perhaps it is the winter dreariness that drags me toward these sunny little fruits. Perhaps it is the way I can play with their shapes, reflections, and the shadows they cast. Perhaps it doesn't matter because I'm having some good fun with them. Who knows? Green Gathering

Today's painting is one of a series of citrus fruit paintings that began with yesterday's little lemon painting. In this one I've moved onto the lime front with a gathering of little green wedges. I focused on the shadows and the contrast between dark and light. The way the shadows produce abstract shapes made it a fun painting to create. Lemon Cut

The fresh smell of lemon, the cut of a yellow citrus fruit--these are the ideas that followed me as I painted this 3x5 inch oil painting. Color and design were my focus as I worked on this especially small little canvas. There are people who work much smaller routinely, but this is about as small as I can comfortably go. I am happy with the results, but it will proably be a while before working this small again. Recharging the mental batteries will be necessary first.

Home from the Coast

Today's painting is one I created quite a while ago on a visit to the Pacific Coast of Washington State. I always take my paints along hoping for a few extra moments to dab the brush around. The trouble is, with the drying time of oil paint, my work seldom travels home with me, but finds a comfortable place on the book shelf and waits for my return. This past weekend, after another jaunt to the coast, this little painting finally made its way home. It is dry and waiting for a new owner. Green, Red, and Glass

Working on a recent still life painting of pears and glass prompted me to paint this little 5x7 inch oil painting. It was created on a gessoed hardboard panel and makes a wonderful companion for my previous painting. Small and traditional, I enjoyed the challenge of painting glass vessels and fruit in both paintings.

Pears and Glass

The reference image for this painting is from the Wetcanvas Image Library. I've looked at it numerous times times, loving the stack of pears in the tall glass container. The photograph was over exposed and I wasn't sure I could pull off a believable redition, but this morning I decided to give it a try. I'm quite satisfied with the results. The work is loose and the colors seem to work well. The painting is 5x7 inches and I'm wishing now that I had put it on a larger support. There are some 11x 14 inch canvases in my studio that might benefit from a little paint. Perhaps doing this again will be future a challenge.

Wedges--Small Still Life Oil Painting

The paint is finally dry on this little 5x7 inch still life oil painting. The cool, damp air of winter slows down the drying time. It took almost a month for the heavy brush strokes to harden. I set my wet paintings on old 45 record stands to dry. It works well, but in the winter time, they fill up and I run out of space. My husband cringes at the idea of turning up the heat any more, so I'm destined to share my space with lots of wet paintings. Things could be worse--wet dogs--wet towels--wet shoes! Oh the perils of living in the Northwest where the rain seems to never stop. When I think of it this way, I'm happy--wet paintings are a luxury I should not take for granted. Purple Chat--Original Still Life Oil Painting--Onions

It is a good thing I got outside yesterday, the rain has returned. The bright spot is that I spend more time in my studio creating new works. Looking for colorful produce to paint is a bit more of a challenge in the winter than in the summer, but luckily, these three purple onions hitched a ride home from the grocery store and decided to chit-chat while I painted them. It was fun working with a limited palette of Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White. The painting is 8x10 inches and will be listed for sale at Small Impressions Gallery along with some of my other small still life oil paintings as soon as it dries.

Lemon-Lime Still Life Oil Painting

Here's another of my little fresh fruit paintings. This one is 6x6 inches on a canvas panel. I set the still life up in my studio with a dark paper foreground and black fabric pinned in the background. A couple of plates that I have painted before served to hold the citrus. I have a little desk lamp, a high intensity one, that focuses from one side and creates just the right amount of light. This painting will eventually be for sale at Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy along with some of my other affordable canvas panel paintings.

Red and Yellow--Original Oil Painting

One of my favorite activities is buying colorful produce just for painting. This little 6x6 inch oil painting is the result of a recent trip to the grocery store. I loved the rich red of this colorful onion. It was fun to paint the dry stem and papery skin while it sat in front of a butter colored plate.
