Red Still Life

It has been a while since I painted flowers.  The season might have something to do with it.  Finding fresh flowers in December and January can only be done by a trip to the florist or the hot house.  Since I didn't make either trip, this little vase of red flowers came right out of my head.  I much prefer the real thing, but it did help brighten my winter mood and give me hope for some upcoming warmer weather.  The painting is 6x6 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas and can be viewed or purchased here.

Painting Glass

This is another in this series that has been jumping off my brush the past few days.  I've enjoyed rendering the glass, but have fought with that yellow daisy every time.  The glass is easy.  It is mostly the background color with  highlights.  I paint shapes and it turns out looking like glass.  But the daisy, she keeps talking back.  It is hard to give the impression of a many petaled flower without painting each spoiled little petal.  This one is the best of the lot and can be purchased at my Etsy Shop, Small Impressions Paintings, by clicking on this link.

Glass and Daisy

A few weeks ago, I began to run out of the small 5x7 inch canvas panels that I usually use for my daily painting.  Usually I order them in bulk and have them sent to my house rather than going to the local discount craft shop where they charge way too much for panels of poor quality.  But, because it is summer and I've been traveling quite a bit, I haven't been home long enough for any kind of delivery.  I didn't want a large order to sit on my front porch for a week or more until I got home.  Consequently, I've been painting larger on  canvases that have been sitting in my closet waiting for just the right subject. It has been a real pleasure to move to bigger canvases and I've decided that "the right subject" is the one that inspires me at the moment.  The size is really not important.  I especially enjoyed painting these little glass jars and had to place a flower in one just to add a little spice.  The painting is 9x 12 inches and will be offered for sale this fall when I begin focusing on sales in my Etsy Shop again.

In the Backyard

This 5x7 inch oil painting was painted with the wish for sunshine. Rain again all day. It gives me a lot of time in the studio, but I am missing springtime. Gift of Tulips

The day before Easter, my lovely sister-in-law visited the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. She returned home with boquets of tulips for everyone, including me. The Sun Came Out

When the sun shines and the flowers begin to bloom, inspiration to paint florals sometimes appears. The sun was out briefly yesterday afternoon and inspiration arrived, too. Though they aren't blooming in the garden, it seems sunflowers are available at most of the local florists. I can see why Van Gogh enjoyed the subject. Sunflower Garden--Finally Found the Sunlight

After days of rain, I finally found the sunlight. Several days on the Pacific Coast and it emerged from beneath the clouds and revealed a cool, crisp, but very sunny weekend. Sunflower Bouquet

Floral paintings are not my usual, but some recent spring weather has caused me to think of flowers. This little 4x6 inch bouquet was so fun to paint, I might do some more florals. I began with the dark centers and worked from dark to light, painting shapes and trying to remind myself to consider shape and color and not think about painting a flower. Fuchsia Blooms--Spring Fever--Color Desire

A few days ago I heard on the local news that we had just travelled through a period of 15 days straight with nothing but gray skies. Since then, it has continued to be gray and damp--no sunshine--going on 20 days now. Perhaps because of this, I've been tempted to paint flowers, something I seldom paint. The bright red and pink of fuchsias tempted my desire for some color. This painting is 5x7 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel.

Sunflowers--American Still Life Oil Painting

This bright little 5x7 inch oil painting is finally dry. I painted in December, but the paint is very thick and has been drying in my studio ever since. Although I don't often paint flowers, this one was fun to create with heavy impasto for every petal. Sunflowers--Original Small Still Life Oil Painting

Flowers are not a subject I paint often, but the rainy weather of December made this trio of sunflowers a most tempting subject. I wasn't sure if success would come because I seldom paint flowers, but I'm pleased with the results. A dark background sets of the brilliance of the yellow petals quite well. I used Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Lemon Yellow, and Transparent Orange to create the thick impasto of the petals. I'm almost tempted to try another flower painting, but I'll have to think hard on that temptation. This painting is 5x7 inches on a gessoed hardboad panel. When it dries, I will list it for sale in my Etsy Gallery.

Summer Daisy

My backyard is full of these beautiful summer daisies. I couldn't resist bringing one in to paint. Putting it in a little medicine jar and setting it on my work table brought the sunshine into my studio.

These are some lovely lilac's from my friend, Paula's yard. The smell filled my kitchen with a wonderful scent that brought delightful connotations of spring. Great fun to paint!

The electricity is up and running. I was able to paint without interruption, and took on the challenge of a yellow daffodil. Yellow can be a difficult color to work with. I'm not completely satisfied with this one--may have to try another.
