Irish Coastline

Today's painting is another 5x7 inch painting from my Irish collection. It is clear why it is called the Emerald Isle when one views the fields of green that hug most of the landscape including the coastline. Irish Lighthouse

I almost forgot to post this little 6x8 inch painting. It is based on a photo my daughter shared with me from a recent trip to Europe. I believe it is close to the town of Dingle in Ireland. It was fun to paint and a joy to view her photos. I am thankful that she has given me permission to paint any or all of her hundreds of photos. Sunset on the Beach

Today's painting was inspired by late summer evenings on the Pacific Coast. As the sun sets, the wet sand takes on a sparkle of the glowing sky. Sea birds pick their way along the shore and all is well. I just wish that's where we were. The winter weather is getting old and I'm ready for a vacation. Shore Birds

A few weeks ago I grabbed this 4x6 inch canvas and promptly made a mess. Sometimes work is better off just wiped out. After wiping the image off, the canvas sat on the shelf for a few weeks and dried. It was the color of a sunset, but there was no painting. At least until today. The muse visited again and these two little shore birds found a home on the golden canvas. It is satisfying when I can make something beautiful out of a dried up mess. Dockside

Working on paintings of seascape or boats always challenges me. I think it is because salt water surrounds me and I'm very familiar with the sights and sounds of the coast. I'm never satisfied with the results of my attempts at painting these local scenes. But, this one made me feel quite satisfied. It is small 5x5 inches. I concentrated on shapes and tried to avoid thinking about painting the sea and boats. Amazingly, I am satisfied with the final product. It is a bit abstract, but I'm wasn't tempted to wipe it out and start over. A delightful success in my eyes! It has joined some of my other paintings at the Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy. Ocean Color--Original Seascape Painting

Most of the time when I paint water, the colors feel exaggerated. After all, I live in the Pacific Northwest where the sky is often gray and rain visits often. We don't have water that is ultramarine blue or any of the other available blue paint that I own. Since I can never seem to get the color right, I've abandoned painting seascapes for some time now. But, then I remembered a little exercise from the past and tried it on this little 5x7 inch oil painting. My palette is limited to Chromatic Black, Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, and Yellow Ochre. The trick is that there is no blue, but the shades of gray take on the appearance of blue. Finally, the color of the sea off the Pacific Northwest Coast! It was a good reminder that an artist can do a lot with a limited palette.

Patch of Blue--Pacific Ocean Painting

This little 4x6 inch painting is another of my little Pacific Ocean Paintings. It was inspired by damp, foggy coastal mornings. Looking up at the sky and searching for a patch of blue is my way of hoping the sun is going to shine and the day will be clear and bright. Sometimes it actually happens. The other little painting from my recent trip was posted a couple of days ago. Both provide a nice little memory of a delightful weekend, and we actually had some sunshine!

Surf and Sunshine

High swells and high tides made Valentines Day an exciting day to visit the Pacific Coast. After a day of pouring rain, the sun finally came out. Coupled with a high tide plenty of 22-24 foot waves splashing and crashing it was quite an exciting day. I had to create a little painting to comemorate the occasion. In comparison to the huge waves, this little painting is just 4x6 inches. When travelling, it is easy to just throw a few of these little canvas panels in my paint box and I never miss a day of painting!
