Playing in the New Year

The new year has begun and so has a spark of abstract inspiration. I've recently been working on a series of little oil paintings that help me understand color and design a little bit better. The series involves working on some little 6x6 inch square canvases, using a palette knife, and experimenting. Some of these little compositions turn out well, and some do not, but I've enjoyed the effort of playing with paint.

As the paint dries, I will be listing the original paintings for sale in the Abstract Art section of my Etsy Shop. I hope you will stop by. There are more to come, but the paint isn't dry yet.

Kitchen Market Adventures

Everytime I go to the grocery store, my eyes are enamoured with the produce section. Stacks of fresh fruits and vegetables are colorful and full of unique shapes. Sometimes I buy fresh items just because they are beautiful, even when I have no idea how to prepare them. After I get them home, the first thing I do is create a still life painting, sometimes an entire series of paintings. When the fresh items have done their duty, they head to the kitchen. This time I brought home Anaheim peppers. I didn't know if they were hot or mild, all I knew was I loved their color, that mellow green, and their long, robust shape. After I painted them, I did some research and they ended up as Chile Rellenos. So good. The original 6x6 inch oil painting is available for purchase here. Larger reproductions are also available at this address.

Limited Palette Oil Painting

This minimalist painting emerged from a limited palette of burnt umber, burnt sienna, English red, and white.  It began with a wash of turpentine and umber and slowly built with touches of the other colors. Thinking about how the old masters were able to create beauty without the modern palette helped me appreciate once again the delightful compositions they created with just a few colors.  The original 6x6 inch painting was created on a stretched canvas and is available for purchase in my Etsy Shop, here.  Larger sized reproduction prints on canvas and paper are available at my website, here. You can also click on the tabs at the top of the page to view more of my original small format paintings, prints, or abstract works.

Peach Harvest

Visiting the farmers' market recently led me to painting peaches.  Bright, colorful, and juicy, my brush created several square format paintings of little fruit gems.  The original oil painting is 6x6 inches on stretched canvas.  I'm also excited that this painting can be reproduced in square format up to size 36x36 inches, just right for a kitchen wall.  In addition to this little creation, I have a collection of square format art that needs to find a home.  In the next few weeks I'll be adding to this collection. I hope you will stop by.  If you are interested in purchasing the original, I will be listing it in my Etsy Shop in the very near future.

Harvest Time Painting

August and early September are one of my favorite times to paint still life.  The produce is coming on fast and furious and I am constantly inspired to paint the harvest.  Right now I have green beans and tomatoes that I can hardly keep up with, but the most beautiful of all produce is the fruit that is available.  This painting was inspired by a rich red Bing cherry.  The full juiciness and color caused me to create this 6x6 inch still life oil painting.  That's it!  A single cherry!  The original can be purchased here at my Etsy shop or reproductions in all sizes are available from my website.  Now, I'm off to gather more inspiration from the wonderful season of fall harvest.

Road Conditions

This is one of four paintings in a recent series I just completed that focuses on road conditions throughout the year.  This is an autumn road, a season of rain and slippery pavement.  Water trickles along the edge of the street and slops across the surface, providing plenty of opportunity for splashing.  The original painting is 6x6 inches and was created on a gallery canvas with professional grade acrylic paints.  The sides are painted black, so it can be hung with or without a frame.  The original can be purchased here and reproductions in larger sizes are available at this link.

Portrait of a City Dweller

Everyone who lives in a large city is familiar with these squatters.  City pigeons strut all over the streets and hang precariously on wires, keeping an eye out for the crumb droppings of those careless humans.  This fellow was created on a 6x6 inch canvas panel.  He was fun to paint and I am pleased to share that he has joined some of my other paintings of birds and animals that are for sale at my Etsy Shop.  Click here to purchase or view him in the shop.

Red Still Life

It has been a while since I painted flowers.  The season might have something to do with it.  Finding fresh flowers in December and January can only be done by a trip to the florist or the hot house.  Since I didn't make either trip, this little vase of red flowers came right out of my head.  I much prefer the real thing, but it did help brighten my winter mood and give me hope for some upcoming warmer weather.  The painting is 6x6 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas and can be viewed or purchased here.

Little Fox

Today's painting is 6x6 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas.  He is another addition to my series of animal portraits.  It is so fun to create these little paintings.  My son is my biggest fan.  If it were up to him, I think he'd like me to just pass them all over to him.  He has a goat, a gorilla, and I can't remember what all.  Maybe for the holidays I'll have to create something just for him. This fellow has SOLD, but there are some more animal paintings available at my Etsy shop .  Original little animal portraits can be viewed here. If you are interested in a fine art print of this little painting, they are available here.

Bottle Collection

Painting glass is a lot of fun. I have a nice little collection of bottles and am always looking for different shapes and colors.  This little 6x6 inch painting shows a small selection of some of my bottles and a pear that my neighbor brought over from his tree.  The pear was sweet and the bottles were just plain fun to paint. The painting is 6x6 inches in oil and can be viewed or purchased here.

Day Lily in Glass

Day Lillie's are one of my favorite flowers. They fill up the landscape and share massive blooms day after day. Although each flower only lasts a day, they are prolific at presenting a delightful collection of blooms every day for most of the summer. This dark red lily from my yard was my inspiration for today's painting.  A collection of little glass bottles seemed an appropriate accompaniment.  The painting is 6x6 inches and is for sale at Etsy shop along with some of my other still life oil paintings.  Click here to view it in the shop or make a purchase.
