Oranges in Glass

My daughter wants me to paint some 12x12 inch paintings for her, so I'm auditioning ideas on some 6x6 inch square panels.  Always looking for sunshine, I emptied a bag of oranges into a little glass bowl.  I love the color and warmth, but not sure whether this will become a larger painting or not.  Some more auditioning is in order to create some still life kitchen paintings.

Three in the Dark

Three little tomatoes inspired today's work.  After a few days of sunshine and then a dark Saturday, I'm longing for color again.  What is more colorful than red?  This painting is 4x6 inches on a canvas panel.  When it is dry, I'm sure it will be looking for a new home.  My house is too crowded with these little studies to keep another one.

Sit Ups

This pepper looks like I feel when doing sit ups. That strain in your stomach and the tension on the back of the neck tells me I'm probably doing the exercise incorrecctly. The painting is a sweet little 4x6 inches on a canvas panel and didn't cause me the pain of even one little sit up.

Fruit Binge--Original Oil Paintings

My fruit painting binge started with that book, The Botany of Desire, by Michael Pollan. The chapter on the "Desire for Sweetness: The Apple," took me back to the time when I painted a lot of apples. They are good practice. An instructor once told me that if I ever wanted to be good at painting the human figure, I better learn to paint fruit. Well, I still don't feel proficient at painting the human figure, but I've sure started to binge on fruit paintings. The color is what attracts me. Fresh fruit and the abstraction of light keeps drawing me back. This little painting is on a canvas panel, is 5x7 inches, and is the continuation of an addiction I can't seem to let go of. As I continue my binge, I'll keep sharing my little fruit paintings. Some of them will be for sale at Small Impressions. After all, I need to support my addiction somehow. Three--Original Apple Painting

This is the third in my recent series of apple paintings. All are quite different; all were fun to paint. This one was created with oil paint on an 8x8 inch stretched canvas. I like the bright red. When it is dry, I will sell it at Small Impressions Gallery along with some of my other small still life oil paintings.

Apple Light--Playing with Paint

Apples are still on my agenda for painting. I enjoyed mixing all the colors before painting. Then I worked in a paint by numbers style only blending where each color met the next to avoid sharp edges on the skin of the apples. It was fun and the effect was pleasing. I'll be playing with this style again in the future. The painting is an 8x10 inch oil painting on a gessoed hardboard panel.

Apples and The Botany of Desire

This little painting was inspired by the first chapter in Michael Pollan's book, The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-eye View of the World. It is a delightful book about the evolution of four domesticated plants, the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato. Though it sounds odd to write an entire book on just four plants, it is truly a delightful read. I learned so much about the history and evolution of the simple apple, that I've been painting apples all morning. These little crab apples are on a 4x6 inch canvas panel. They have joined some of my other small still life paintings at Small Impressions Gallery and can be purchased here for $24.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses. I've just begun the second chapter on the tulip. Pollan's style is refreshing, fun, and inspires me to paint. Tulips are next; I wonder what will happen when I get to the chapter on marijuana.

Lime Plate--Original Still Life Oil Painting

Today's painting is 8x8 inches on a stretched canvas. Originally there was another painting underneath, but I didn't like it. It had been kicking around in my studio for a while; I hated to toss it and had planned to take the canvas off and replace it with new canvas. On an impulse I began painting right on top of the existing painting. The foreground is the original, but the limes and the white plate emerged as I continued painting. Though the perspective is off, I like the abstract quality of it. I may eventually sell it, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying having this new little painting in my house.

Banana Peppers--Original Still Life Oil Painting

This is another one of my no-blend fruit paintings. I like the results of mixing my paint for the fuit in a four-color range, painting boldly, and not fussing. When I skip the blending, my paintings are finished more quickly and don't suffer from the mud of over working for some unnecessary detail. The colors remain pure and bright. When the paint is dry, this one will join some of my other fruit and vegetable paintings at my Etsy Gallery. It is 5x7 inches on gessoed hardboard panel.

Apple Time--Original American Still Life Oil Painting

The apples are starting to fall from the tree in my backyard. The tree produces so many apples that we pick them in 5-gallon buckets. They have provided a lot of painting inspiration over the past few years. It seems I'm always painting apples once the tree gets heavy. This painting is a 5x7 inch oil painting on gessoed hardboard.
