Morning Meadow--Original Landscape Oil Painting

This weekend I spent some time practicing the painting fog and falling in love with some new color combinations. My new favorite tube color is M. Graham's Azo Green and my new favorite mixture is Sap Green and Dioxazine Purple. I usually order my paint from Dick Blick, but ran out of white and didn't have time to wait for an order. Visiting the local Artco to pick up a tube of Titanium, I noticed they had increased their selection of M. Graham paints, one of my favorite brands. Being a paint addict, I bought a tube of Azo Green just to test it out. It is a lovely transparent yellow-green that mixes well with the Sap Green that is a staple on my palette. I also experimented with adding Dioxazine Purple to Sap in order to get a dark green. Usually I mix Sap and Ultramarine Blue for a dark green, but the Sap and purple mixture is so intensely dark that I'm not sure I'll ever go back to my old Sap/blue combo. The new combo is perfect for painting the darkest of evergreens so common here in the Pacific Northwest. Today's painting was the result of some of my fog practice with a tiny bit of Azo Green highlighting the evergreens. It is 8x10 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel. When it dries, I will either put it up for sale at Impressions Gallery or create a larger version. I have a number of 18x24 and 24x30 canvases that are crying out for paint.

Sunlight on the Grass--Original Small Format Oil Painting

The weather is cooperating right now and leading me to believe summer might be here. This painting was recently inspired by sunshine and shadows at Titlow Park in Pierce County, Washington State when it felt like summer had arrived. This small 5x7 inch painting can be purchased at the Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses. Other small paintings of fields are also available at the Small Impressions Gallery.

Delta Fields--Original Abstract Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas

This abstract landscape painting was created after a visit to one of my favorite places, the Nisqually Wildlife Preserve in Washington State. I love the warmth of the fields, the color of the grasses, and the green of the scrub trees that dot the landscape. This painting is 9x12 inches on hand-stretched canvas. I especially like painting on hand-stretched canvas surfaces because the hand-cut stretcher bars are sturdy, the surface feels substantial, and knowing it is completely handmade is satisfying. It can be purchased at Impressions Gallery for $175.00 plus $12.50 for shipping to US addresses. Additional paintings in sizes 8x10 to 24X30 inch sizes are also available at the Gallery.

Barns--American Landscape Farm Painting

Summer has arrived. In spite of beautiful weekend weather, I still found some time to paint the Different Strokes Challenge. It was especially fun because the reference photo was a desaturated photograph for which we were invited to add our own color scheme. What a pleasure. The painting is an 8x10 inch oil painting on a gessoed hardboard panel.

Poppies at the Pond--Original Abstract Landscape Painting

This weekend the weather was beautiful so I took advantage of it and hiked one of my favorite suburban trails, the Soundview Trail. It is located near the Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wasington. The trail sweeps down from Grandview Drive toward Puget Sound. In route, hikers pass a number of small ponds. This painting is based on a photo I took of one of the ponds. The brilliant blue sky was reflected in the water. California Poppies sprinkled themselves amongst the lush green grass of the shoreline and bright green algae floated on the blue surface of the pond. It was a color feast for tired winter eyes. With a new brush in hand and a desire for abstract painting, I created this little 5x7 inch oil painting.

Seattle Public Market--Original Small Format Oil Painting

I have wanted to paint this famous Seattle cityscape for a long time--the Seattle Public Market. Not sure of the best approach, I chose a black gessoed panel to help me create this nocternal view. The lettering was the most challenging aspect, keeping it straight and making it appear florescent. It was a fun little painting to create.

Toes--American Ballet Oil Painting

The subject of this little oil painting is out of ordinary for me, but brings back memories of a few years I spent volunteering for a local ballet company. It was fun to be part of the excitement. My job was quick changes and costume repair--not dancing. The dancers were very sweet and the excitement back stage was always electric. This little 5x7 inch painting was a fun little one.

Fog and Heather--Original Landscape Oil Painting

Living in the Pacific Northwest, morning fog is common. Even in the spring it isn't unusual to find it lifting to reveal the lovely color of an early spring field. The two combined to inspire this little 5x7 inch creation. I used oil paints on a gessoed hardboard surface, painting quickly and focusing on the texture of the foreground. It should be dry in a few days. It is available for sale in my Etsy Gallery along with some of my other paintings of fields. Purchase it for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping by clicking here.

River--Original Landscape Oil Painting

Lately I've been practicing the painting of water. It is a good little challenge for me. Trying to make sure it looks like water and not a path or a road seems to be easiest for me when reflections are present. This 8x10 inch oil painting is a typical western Washington State river with evergreen trees providing a considerable part of the surrounding vegetation. I'm fairly satisfied with the outcome of the water, but the yellow trees still need some work. When it dries, I may go in and do some touch ups, but for now I'll take a break and ponder some more references for future water practice.

Pacific Storm--Original Seascape Oil Painting

Spring weather off the coast of Washington State is always changing . One minute it is sunny and bright, the next the clouds are dropping moisture in thick, heavy drops. I love to watch the weather move across the water, morphing its way along. This 5x7 inch painting was inspired by the clouds and heavy moisture of a Pacific Coast rain storm. The painting is oil on a gessoed hardboard panel. It is for sale in my Etsy Gallery for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses along with other small format paintings of water and reflections. Click here for more details on purchasing this painting.

Lupine Field--Original Landscape Oil Painting

Spring is here and everything is starting to bloom. The lupine in my backyard are preparing to send their lavender spikes forward; the anticipation of their blossoms inspired today's 5x7 inch miniature oil painting. I have listed it for sale in my Etsy Gallery for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses. Click here for more detail on purchasing or for closeups of the thick impasto paint.

Edge of the Lake--Original Landscape Oil Painting

Today's featured painting was a great learning experience. There are a number of challenges, some of which I overcame and some of which need still need more attention. The suggestion of twigs and vegetation in the background was partially successful. I like the warm color and the smaller twigs in the distance. I like the water and the way I captured it. The paint is thick and textured In spite of the things I like about this painting, there were a number of issues that made me want to scrape off the entire thing. I needed to plan the focal point more specifically in advance. I needed to inentionally tone down the intensity of areas that are not the focal point. I could go on, but I won't. The painting is 8x10 inches. I hope you enjoyed viewing it.

Decisions, Decisions--American Landscape Oil Paintings

Today I find myself having to choose five paintings for entry into an upcoming regional art show. Northwest themes are expected, so I've combed through my collection of works, trying to pick some 8x10 inch paintings. This 8x10 inch oil painting of a sunrise over Mount Rainier, a Northwest icon, is one I've always liked. It will probably be one of the five. It is always a challenge for me to choose from my own works--what I like isn't necessarily what appeals to others. I've lined up about ten paintings, will stare at them for a day or two and ask anyone willing to give an opinion before making a final choice.

Winter Walk--Original Landscape Oil Painting

I painted this little 5x7 inch oil painting in February after a walk on the Soundview Trail in University Place, Washington. It was definitely still winter. The trees were bare and just a trace of sunlight could be seen on the otherwise cold, damp landscape. I tried to depict that trace of sunlight in the midst of cold. This painting is listed in my Etsy Gallery and can be purchased for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses by clicking here.

New York--American Cityscape Painting

This painting is from the current Different Strokes Challenge reference. I love doing these challenges because they are usually out of my comfort zone. Moving beyond what is comfortable is necessary in order to improve at anything. Seldom do I paint vehicles and a cityscape requires careful attention to perspective. I'm fairly satisfied with the results. The buildings resemble buildings and the cars resemble cars. I wasn't fond of painting with so much gray. Clear, bright color is what draws me to paint, but I didn't want the results to be too exaggerated. The yellow of the taxi helped to satisfy my color needs. The painting is 5x7 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel.
