Another inspiration from my days at the coast is this little 4x6 inch painting of a Blue Heron. They hang out in the grassy mud flats looking for a snack. When they fly it is amazing. Their wings span six feet and what looks like no neck at all extends to what looks like two or three feet. It is always delightful to see one fly.

At the Beach
This past couple of days I was lucky enough to spend some time at the Washington Coast. Since it was a holiday weekend, crowds were the norm. People of all sorts were wandering along the shoreline looking for treasures in the surf, having picnics, wading in the waves, and having fun. An elderly man walking along the water's edge inspired this little 4x6 inch painting. I love the shapes of people--not the angles of bathing suit models, but the shapes of everyday people. This guy is one of those everyday folks that are the most fun to paint.

Evening Shadows
In this 5x7 inch oil painting, I was playing with values and transparent color. Burnt Sienna and a wonderful Gamblin oil paint color called asphaultum were used to develop the background. Asphaultum is a warm, transparent dark brown. Coming from the tube it looks similar to burnt umber, but it doesn't have the same qualities when it is applied to canvas. For artists who haven't used it, I'd definitely recommend adding it your palette.

Oranges in Glass
My daughter wants me to paint some 12x12 inch paintings for her, so I'm auditioning ideas on some 6x6 inch square panels. Always looking for sunshine, I emptied a bag of oranges into a little glass bowl. I love the color and warmth, but not sure whether this will become a larger painting or not. Some more auditioning is in order to create some still life kitchen paintings.

Three Little Charms
This 6x8 inch painting of three little cherries was a fun one to paint. I like the simplicity and color. It was created on a gallery wrapped canvas so it can be hung with or without a frame. It can be purchased online from the Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy by visiting this link.

Lakeside
This has been a very busy week, dealing with broken down cars, rotting siding on the house, and the challenges of daily living. It seemed time to paint was squashed out by too many unexpected occurrences this week. Finally I was able to steal a few moments to paint. This soothing lakeside dream on a 6x8 inch stretched canvas was the summation of a very hectic week. It felt good to be in the studio again with the radio and my paints. Hopefully next week will be less stressful. Click here to purchase.

Sweets from the Garden
I'm longing to put some tomato plants out in the garden, but it has been way too cold. Painting these sweet little treats was the next best thing. The painting is 4x6 inches, oil on canvas panel. They have joined some of my other paintings of fruits and vegetables in the Small Impressions Gallery. Visit here to see it in the gallery or make a purchase.

Beach Comber
Here he is, looking for something to guzzle. I am amazed at the large nasty chunks of beach crud these guys can gulp down in one swallow. This one is 6x8 inches on a gallery-wrapped canvas. He has joined some of my other oil paintings of birds and animals at the Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy and can be purchased at this link.

In the Backyard
This 5x7 inch oil painting was painted with the wish for sunshine. Rain again all day. It gives me a lot of time in the studio, but I am missing springtime. It should be warm and comfortable like the temperature of the painting. The painting can be purchased by visiting the Small Impressions Shop at Etsy. Click here to make a purchase.

. . . and Then the Sun Came Out
On Friday night I left town for the coast, took my paints and hoped the weather would warm up. Arriving in the dark, the wind was blowing like crazy and I wondered about my choice for weekend relaxation. When I awoke Saturday morning, it was beautiful. The sun was out, and even though it was cold, I was happy to see it. By the time I finished painting these three little pears, the air had warmed and I was able to go outside to play. My bicycle got a workout, the beach and I communicated for a while, and then I painted some more. It was a lovely weekend.
